Why does the Lord require us to do these things—to fear Him, walk in all His ways, love Him, serve Him, and keep all His commandments? Why must we commit to the Lord? Moses answered the question (Deut. 7:6-8 and Deut.10:14-15
Read verse 8 The Lord chose us because of His love for us.
Moses wanted to stir up the people to obey God, to make sure they completely destroyed all enemies who would keep them out of the Promised Land. God's people must march into the Promised Land and lay claim to the inheritance promised by God. This was their right: to live as conquerors throughout life and to secure their spiritual rest in the Promised land of God. Five strong reasons are given for obeying God, for conquering all the enemies who seek to defeat them and keep them out of the Promised Land.
1. You are to obey God. Go forth and conquer all the enemies of the Promised Land. This you are to do for a very special reason: you are holy, set apart to God. You are chosen to be His special people, His special treasure—the people who are totally committed to God, committed to love and obey Him. You are chosen to be His witnesses to the immoral, lawless, and violent peoples of the earth—witnesses to the only living and true God" (Isaiah 43:10).
Moses declared that God's people are not chosen because of any merit or value within themselves. In fact, the Israelites had been the fewest (smallest in number) of all people when God chose them during the time that immorality, lawlessness, and violence was in the hearts of the people in the land. God made several great promises to Abraham if he would just follow and obey God: The promise of the Promised Land
The promise of the Promised Seed, the coming Messiah and Savior of the world (Jesus Christ)
The promise of a great nation of people Revelation 7:9
After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;
It was from Abraham that God's people had been born. The present generation of Israelites standing before Moses were the descendants of Abraham and so are we today.
Acts 3:24-26 (KJV)
24 Yea, and all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days.
25 Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed.
26 Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities.
The Israelites were not chosen because of any merit or value within themselves. They were chosen only because of God's love and oath to Abraham and the forefathers Deut. 7:8 and John 3:16-17.
2. You are to obey God, conquer all the enemies of the Promised Land because the Lord redeemed you and saved you from the enslavement of Egypt (Deut. 7:8) We are now God's people, saved and redeemed by Him.
"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them" (Ephes. 2:8-10).
3. You are to obey God, conquer all the enemies of the Promised Land because the Lord your God is the true God. There is no other God; all other gods are false. They are lifeless, unable to save or help in times of need, unable to give a full and victorious life as you walk throughout life. There is only one true and living God, the Lord your God that keeps His covenant for those that love Him with their whole heart.
"For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people" (Hebrews 8:10).
4. You are to obey God, conquer all the enemies of the Promised Land because God does not hesitate to execute justice (Deut. 7:10). God will destroy all who hate and reject Him. All the Canaanite nations had filled to the brim "their cup of iniquity." Consequently, they were to be destroyed.
"But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath" (Romans 2:8).
5. You are to obey God, conquer all the enemies of the Promised Land because obedience is demanded by God (Deut. 7:11). We as believers in Jesus Christ must obey all God's commandments. We can live a life of conquest and of rest—both physical and spiritual conquest and rest (Hebrews 4:1-11).
Matthew 11:27-29 (KJV)
27 All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.
28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
This is what the Lord God requires of us. He is the great Creator and Sovereign Ruler of the universe. He alone dwells in the majestic glory and splendor of perfection, overlooking the whole universe as Sovereign Lord and Possessor of all things. Yet He stooped down; He humbled Himself to love and choose us—all believers—to be His people. Through Jesus Christ He has made it possible for us to become His sons and daughters, a part of the family of God. For these reasons, we must totally dedicate, wholeheartedly commit our lives to Him.
